HLTH 1110 Nutrition
Introduces basic nutrition as it relates to total health. Personal
nutritional health analysis as well as the relationship between diet and
disease will be presented. The course includes current and
controversial topics dealing with nutrition. The main focus
centers on the basic nutrients and how the body uses, stores, and
eliminates them. Nutrition and its relationship to exercise and
weight control throughout a lifetime are discussed. F,S,Su HLTH 1120 Personal and Community Health Introduces a variety of topics and how they relate to personal and community lifestyle choices. Emphasis on wellness and making wise lifestyle choices. F,S HLTH 1123 Stress Management Assists the student in examining and managing their body's physiological and psychological responses to stress. Self-assessments will help the student to identify personal stressors. Students will participate in numerous stress management strategies and relaxation techniques including time management, diaphragmatic breathing, meditation, autogenics, progressive muscle relaxation, cognitive reappraisal, behavior modification, journal writing, and other coping techniques. F,S HLTH 1130 Drug Use and Abuse Presents a study of all the classifications of drug pharmacology that affect the human body and a major focus on drugs and their affects on the nervous system, the mind and body. Social issues discussed are drug trafficking, legal/illegal aspects of drug use/abuse, issues impacting our society for all ages including drug and violence/crime, drug taking during pregnancy, drug testing in the workplace, the addictive personality, drugs and HIV. Various treatment/therapies prevention of drug use/abuse. F,S HLTH 1155 Lifetime Fitness Studies physical fitness, nutrition and stress as they relate to health. Through testing and self-assessments, the student's current status is analyzed. After the information on ways to improve skills in each area is presented, the student will develop a plan for implementation. The course will include information on cardiovascular and cancer risk reduction, aging and health, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse control. This course may be used to fulfill both the physical education and health requirement for the A.A. degree. F,S PHED 1145 Walking and/or Jogging Provides students the opportunity to improve their cardiovascular fitness through walking and jogging. Students will develop and execute a personal walking or running program. Progress will be monitored throughout the semester. Students will learn the benefits of walking or running as a stress reduction activity. Lecture topics include fitness components, fitness principles, nutritional guidelines, body composition, stress management and personal wellness. This course may be tgaken twice for a maximum of four credits.
