Eating healthy is a very important part of your life.  The key to growing big and strong is choosing the right foods for your diet.  The food pyramid is a model that helps you to understand what types of foods need to be included in your diet.  The food pyramid also helps you decide how many servings of the various food groups that you will need throughout your day.  It is important that you know how to give your body the right amount of nutrients.  This activity was created to teach you a healthy way of eating.  Eating right is the first step to leading a healthy life.  After this activity is completed you should be able to plan a day of meals for yourself while using the pyramid as your guide!

For this activity you will be planning three nutritious meals for your diet.  These meals will include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  After researching about nutrition and the food pyramid you should have an understanding of healthy foods.  You are given this task because it is very important that you know how to plan meals for yourself without the help of an adult.  The goal of this activity is not to be able to make the meals that you create, but to understand what belongs in your meals throughout the day.  Within the meals you want to include serving sizes and a picture of the various foods.  After you are done making your menu for the day, write about the most important things that you learned after researching the food pyramid.

  1. First you will need to gather all of the materials that you need; 2 worksheets from your teacher, pencil, notebook paper, and markers or crayons.
  2. Once you have gathered all of the materials that you need you will begin by going to the website http://www.mypyramid.gov
  3. When you are on the website you want to click on the link “inside the pyramid” which appears on the left side.  Take a look at all the various levels of the pyramid and what is included within the levels.
  4. On the blank pyramid worksheet provided by your teacher fill in each level including the types of foods and the serving amounts.
  5. After looking at “inside the pyramid”, go ahead and look around on the website at the other links such as “my pyramid plan” and “tips and resources.”
  6. Within “my pyramid plan” and “tips and resources” you will find useful information to plan your daily menu.
  7. Before leaving this website, make sure to go to the link titled “for kids”, within this link you will find various games and activities.
  8. Within the “for kids” link play my pyramid blastoff game.
  9. Also, before leaving the website make sure that you have enough important information on your worksheet so that you can begin to create your daily menu including three meals.
  10. Use the second worksheet that your teacher gave you to fill in your daily menu including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  11. Make sure to include what the food is, serving sizes and pictures for the different foods that you use.
  12. When you are finished with your project take some time to write two paragraphs on some of the most important things that you learned through your research, use notebook paper.
