Course Outcom= es: The students will be able to demonstrate the:

1.        Ability to understand basic ideas from calculus both symbolically and conceptually. Student will demonstrate proficiency

        =       in differentiation and integration skills, understanding in the geom= etry behind the computations, and will develop a sense

        =       of how calculus can be applied to everyday life.
2.        Ability to apply differentiation skills to graphing functions. Student will use derivatives to complement their use of the

graphing calculator to investigate functions.

3.        Ability to understand and determine appropriate applications of differentiation to optimization problems drawn from

business, agriculture, and from everyday life.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Other applications would include marginal cost analysis, linear approximations and related rates.=

      4.       Abili= ty to understand and determine appropriate applications of integration to finding areas and volumes, to economics

        =       and to solving simple differential equations.

Calculators:<= /b>    A graphing calculator is highly recommended. I recommend a TI 83, 84, 85, or = 86.

Homework:=

Homework will be grad= ed each week and is worth 10 points per assignment. It will be collected on quiz day e= ach week, unless there is an exam that week in which case it will be turned in = on exam day. Homework is graded = on completeness. Every problem m= ust be attempted and you must neatly show your work on all assignments. Answers without the supporting wor= k will receive little or no credit! = Homework turned in late will have poi= nts deducted at the discretion of the instructor. Keep up with your assignments, bec= ause daily work done completely will make test and quiz preparation significantly easier.

Quizzes:=

Quizzes are given abo= ut once a week and cover the previous week’s material. These may be in-class quizzes or take-home quizzes. Each is wo= rth 10 points. Keeping up with daily work will give you better success on these we= ekly quizzes! The lowest quiz score during the course will be dropped and the remaining scores will be averaged together for approximately 100 points. IF YOU ARE ABSENT FOR A QUIZ, THEN THIS WILL BE COUNTED AS YOUR DROPPED QUIZ.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES WILL BE GIVEN! = Situations (e.g., extended illness, death in family, etc.) that cause many missed clas= ses will be dealt with on a student-by-student basis.

Classwork:

Occasionally there wi= ll be individual or group assignments during the class period that will be collected. These are meant for additional practice and problem solving.&n= bsp; They will be graded on completeness and correctness. These assignments will total no mo= re than 25 points of your final grade. If you are absent for a cla= sswork assignment, it is your responsibility to make it up in a timely manner.

Exams:

There will be four ex= ams worth 100 points each. The fi= nal exam will be comprehensive and worth 200 points. YOU MUST CALL, E-MAIL OR NOTIFY ME ON THE DAY OF THE EXAM OR EARLIER IN ORDER T= O BE ALLOWED TO SCHEDULE A MAKE-UP EXAM. All make-up exams need to be completed before I hand back the exams. IF NO CONTACT IS MADE,= THEN NO MAKE-UP WILL BE ALLOWED.   There are no retakes allowed on exams or quizzes so please be prepar= ed to put your best effort forward on the day of the test.

Attendance:

Even though no offici= al attendance is taken, regular attendance is recommended and crucial in a mathematics class since subsequent classes are based on ideas developed in previous classes. If you do have to miss a class, you a= re still responsible for learning the material that was taught in that class a= nd for any exams, quizzes, classwork or homework missed or due the next class.= YOU WILL STILL BE EXPECTED TO TAKE AN EXAM OR QUIZ ON THE SCHEDULED DAY EVEN IF= YOU WERE ABSENT THE DAY BEFORE. All make-up work needs to be completed in a timely manner at the discretion of = the instructor. If an absence is unexcused, then make-up work may not be accepted.

As a courtesy to all,= please be sure that your cell phone and pager are turned off during class.

Be on time. It is very disruptive to those aro= und you if you come in late.

Be courteous.

Be in class to be successful.

You are responsible f= or what happens in class whether you are in attendance or not.

Do not cheat. Any cheating will result in a zero= on that test, quiz, homework or classwork. Other actions may be taken at the discretion of the instructor.
