This course is a broad-based introduction to creative arts of a wide range of people, cultures, styles, and movements, as well as the various cultural, religious, economic, and political factors related to their creation. Major works of painting, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts from prehistory to the present will be studied. No previous knowledge of art or art history is required. Students will learn to do the following: Identify major works of art, artists, and artistic styles Use proper art historical terms to discuss works of art Understand and explain the significance of works of art in terms of the styles and methods employed in their creation Analyze the relationship between art and life in historical and cultural contexts Understand the ways in which art expresses the ideas of diverse cultures Understand and explain the various cultural, religious, economic, and political factors that have influenced artists and their work Write a brief formal analysis of a work of art Analyze/critique the display of art forms in a museum setting
