This lecture/discussion course is an historical survey of major works in painting, sculpture, architecture, and decorative arts from prehistory to 1400. Students will learn to understand and use art historical terms; identify individual works and artistic styles; understand the creative intent of artists and the styles and methods employed in their creation; comprehend the cultural, spiritual/religious, societal, and political philosophies that influenced works of art; and recognize and appreciate cross-cultural differences and similarities.
