Note: You must have Adobe Reader installed on your computer in order to access most of the information on this site. The program may be downloaded for free here. This lecture/discussion course is an historical survey of major works in painting, sculpture, architecture, calligraphy, and decorative arts from non-western cultures around the world dating from prehistory to the present. Art from Pakistan, India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, the Islamic world, the Americas, Africa, and the Pacific will be studied. Students will learn to understand and use art historical terms; identify individual works and artistic styles from various cultures; understand the creative intent of artists and the styles and methods employed in their creation; comprehend the cultural, spiritual/religious, societal, and political philosophies that influenced works of art; and recognize and appreciate cross-cultural differences and similarities.
