Explores major works of architecture around the world dating from prehistory to the present. An emphasis is placed on understanding the architectural significance of individual monuments in terms of the styles and methods employed in their creation as well as the various environmental, cultural, social, religious, economic, and political factors that influenced these monuments. No previous knowledge of art history or architecture is required. In this course, you will learn to:
  • Identify major works of architecture, architects, and architectural styles from prehistory to the present
  • Apply an understanding of vocabulary and cultural characteristics of major historical architectural styles
  • Understand and explain the significance of works of architecture in terms of the styles and methods employed in their creation
  • Analyze the relationship between architecture and life in historical and cultural contexts
  • Understand the ways in which architecture expresses ideas and meets needs of diverse cultures throughout the world
  • Understand and explain the various environmental, cultural, social, religious, economic, and political factors that have influenced the development of architecture throughout history
  • Identify and describe various architectural forms, styles and techniques
