HLTH 1155 Lifetime Fitness (2 credits)

Studies physical fitness, nutrition and stress as they relate to health. Through testing and self-assessments, the student's current status is analyzed. After the information on improving skills in each area is presented, the student will develop a plan for implementation. The course will include information on cardiovascular and cancer risk reduction, aging and health, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse control. Course may be used to fulfill one credit toward the physical education requirement for the A.A. degree.

PHED 1100 Introduction to Physical Education  (2 credits)

Introduces the discipline of physical education and the professional opportunities in the field.  Significant historical events are presented and current issues in physical education are discussed. Students begin to develop a philosophy of education while beginning the process of career exploration and planning. This course is intended for students in the A.S. program for Physical Education. This course will not meet the physical education requirement for the A.A. degree.

PHED 1106 Bowling (1 credit)

Introduces the basic rules, courtesies, and scoring of bowling. Correct bowling technique and aiming strategies will be presented. Students will experience league play and special tournament formats. This course may be taken for up to a maximum of three credits.

PHED 1144  Volleyball (1 credit)

Introduces power volleyball skills, rules, and strategies.  The 4-2, 5-1, and 6-2 offensive strategies and formations will be presented.  This course may be taken up to three times for credit.

PHED 1145 Walking/Jogging (2 credits)

Provides students the opportunity to improve their cardiovascular fitness through walking and jogging.  Students will develop and execute a personal walking or running program.  Progress will be monitored throughout the semester.  Students will learn the benefits of walking or running as a stress reduction activity.  Lecture topics include fitness components, fitness principles, nutritional guidelines, body composition, stress management and personal wellness.  This course may be taken twice for a maximum of four credits.

PHED 1180  Approved Activity (1 credit)

Is intended for students who cannot participate in other Physical Education courses due to permanent physical disability or limitation.  Students will meet with the instructor to discuss physical abilities and design a 30-hour activity program to work toward improved fitness.  Students will be required to perform 30 hours of activity.  Students should discuss participation with their physicians.  Written permission of instructor.

PHED 2100  Anatomical Kinesiology and Biomechanics (3 credits)

Examines both the kinematics (describes motion) and the kinetics (explains how and why) of human movement.  The structural, physiological, and mechanical factors that influence human motion will be studied.  This course is intended for students in the A.S. program for Physical Education.  This course will not meet the physical education requirement for the A.A. degree.

PHED 2201 Outdoor Activity Sampler (1 credit)

Introduces several outdoor activities, which may include any or all of the following:  canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, rock climbing, adventure ropes course, hiking, camping, nature's edibles or outdoor cooking.  This course will take place over the weekend plus one on-campus class period.  Special fee is required.

PHED 2210 Winter Skills (1 credit)

Introduces the skills, techniques, equipment, and ethics of wilderness oriented skills, such as winter camping, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing.  Provides a variety of exposure to skills so that students may pursue interests beyond this course.  This course takes place over one weekend with one on-campus class period prior to the trip for orientation.  Special fee required.  Pass/Fail grading option only.

PHED 2214  Wilderness Navigation (1 credit)

Provides instruction and experience related to the use of map and compass for wilderness navigation and problem solving.  This course will take place over one weekend with one on-campus class prior to the trip for orientation. Students will hike through a wilderness area in small groups with radio contact with the instructor.  Special fee required.  Pass/Fail grading option only.

INTS 1000  On Course (1 credit)

Introduces proven strategies to help students create greater success in college and in life.  Provides an interactive environment for students to identify their motivation and opportunities for personal growth, engage in academic and career decision making, and explore and utilize campus resources and services.  Strongly recommended for all new degree-seeking students.
