COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a study of physical fitness, nutrition and stress as they relate to health.  Through testing and self-assessments, the student’s current status is analyzed.  After the information on improving skills in each area is presented, the student will develop a plan for implementation.  The course will include information on cardiovascular disease and cancer risk reduction, aging and health, and substance abuse control.  This course may be used to fulfill one credit toward the physical education requirement and one credit toward the health requirement.

COMMUNICATION:  Be sure to activate your student email account.  This is the official communication method for IHCC and I will use it if I need to contact you.  I will respond to your emails within 24 business hours, which means if you email me Friday afternoon I will respond by Monday afternoon.  Also activate your D2L account.  This is a hybrid course with some material presented electronically on D2L.  It is your responsibility to check the course site at least twice per week and sometimes more often when discussions are occurring online. 

EXTRA HELP:  SmartThinking is an online tutoring service available on the IHCC web site and the Learning Center on second floor Library Building is available for writing and math assistance.  Please use these services as necessary to improve your papers and your understanding of the course material.

COURSE OUTCOMES: The student will:

1.  Evaluate their motivation for taking control of their health and lifestyle habits.

2.  Complete a three-day nutrient analysis, recognizing areas of deficiencies and what changes should be made.

3.  Measure their performance on health and skill related fitness components and develop a plan to improve their current level of fitness.

4.  Identify current stressors and utilize stress management and relaxation techniques to minimize stress levels.

5.  Recognize the risk factors in developing cancer and cardiovascular disease.

6.  Discuss other health concerns.

ATTENDANCE:  Two consecutive weeks of nonattendance without contacting the instructor will result in an F.  It is the student’s responsibility to find out what was missed when absent.

COURSE EVALUATION:

Labs                 20 X 4 =          80        Labs are due by Wednesday of the week listed.  Bring to class.

Quizzes                        10 X 6 =          60        Quizzes must be taken online by Saturday at midnight for the week listed.  (lowest score will be dropped)

Discussions      6 X 5 =                        30        Online discussions:  Read the chapter then make your first

posting by midnight on Tuesday.  Read the other postings then make your response by midnight on Saturday.  Your first posting must be at least 75 words and relate to the text information.  This one is worth 3 points.  Your second posting must respond to something someone else posted.  Your response must be at least 40 words and relate new information either in support or rebuttal.  This second post is worth 2 points.  At the end of your posting indicate the word count.  There are 7 topics for the course.  You must participate in at least 6 of these discussions.

Tests                4 X 30 =          120      Test will be held during class time on the days listed on the course schedule.

Wellness Program =                 40        Written project.

Workouts =                              20        During class time and outside of class.  Keep your exercise logs up to date.

GRADING:  A= 378-420       B=336-377      C=294-335      D=252-293      F<252

All assignments must be turned in on time or points will be deducted.   If you miss a test, you must speak with the instructor prior to the test date to arrange a make-up exam or call or email the day of the exam if you are ill.  Quizzes must be completed online by the deadline or you receive a zero.  Discussions must also be posted by the deadline or you will receive a zero.  Further details and deadlines are posted on the course D2L site.

When turning in assignments outside of class time, please slide them underneath my office door, A213, or email them to me.

Plagiarism and Cheating:  It is unacceptable to submit the work of another person as your own.  If you quote, summarize, paraphrase, or use the ideas of another, you must accurately attribute that information.  If you do not acknowledge the source, you are plagiarizing. 

In this course, plagiarism/cheating will result in a failure for the assignment.  In addition, plagiarism and cheating are covered by the Student Code of Conduct.  In this course, plagiarism will also result in the initiation of the Student Code of Conduct Disciplinary Process. Incomplete Grade and Withdrawal Information: Students must initiate requests for either an incomplete grade or withdrawal from a course by filing the appropriate form with Enrollment Services. Students who stop attending classes without completing the withdrawal process may receive a grade of “F,” and are responsible for all tuition/fees associated with the course registration.  Withdrawal forms must be submitted by April 18.  Failure to complete a course may jeopardize your financial aid.  Please see the current Class Schedule or Catalog for details.
