A WebQuest for 2nd
Grade Science Class Designed by Noreen Hauer
Introduction | Learners | Standards | Process | Resources | Evaluation | Conclusion | Credits | Student Page
You are about to go on a great adventure today! I
want you to pretend that you are a botanist scientist that studies plants and one
day you woke up to find out that you were as small as a plant! Wow! Now you
can learn even more about plants and see them better, because you are the
same size as the plants! You
will work with 2 other students and do research, to find the answers to the
following questions. Then make a Journal book of your life cycle as a plant
growing up starting as a seed to a mature plant. Draw a picture of each stage
of your life cycle development and also write a few sentences or a short
paragraph about what is happening to you below each picture. Or, you could do
a Picture storybook by drawing each stage of your growth as a plant with a
picture. The grade level for this
lesson is second grade. This is a Science course, but also a researching and writing
course. The students will be able to use their talents in art and creativity
also. This would be a great adventure for a Third grade class too, if the
questions were more extensive, and there were more requirements for the
writing in their journal. The learners will need to
have their teacher introduce them to a few new words, such as: ·
Photosynthesis ·
Co2
(Carbon Dioxide) ·
Chlorophyll They will also need to have
been introduced to the internet/websites, to gather their information on the
computer, along with the basic skills of using the computer.
What will students learn as
a result of this lesson? This project has been
aligned with the Minnesota
Language Arts Standards. I.

A. 2,4,5,7,8
Here are
some questions to think about when you are researching your questions: a)
When
I describe myself as a plant, how many parts do I have? b)
When
I’m hungry, what would I eat or drink? c)
What
are the things that would hurt me? d)
Who
would want to hurt me? e)
Who
helps me grow? Be sure to
write all your information down on a separate sheet of paper before you draw
your pictures. Then you can write your story under your pictures in your
journal book. ***Don’t
forget to make a cover page for your storybook with a title on it too. (You
can draw a picture of you as a plant on the cover and you should color it
with as many colors as you want, to make it look nice. Remember, this is like
a story about you!)
Each group of students
should be able to work easily with each other. They may need to do some
research at home on their computer or in the computer classroom.
The resources needed for this lesson are: ·
A computer ·
Pencil ·
Crayons ·
Notebook to keep information they’ve
gathered from their researching. ·
A scrapbook or construction paper to make their
storybook. ·
A ruler to draw lines on the bottom of page to
write their story on. (optional) This would be fine for one teacher, but a parent
or aide would be helpful in the guiding of the researching.
You have the knowledge to
grow your own garden. *Now you can take that
journey in a short video by clicking on this flower. ·
