Course Presentation:   Web enhanced program, utilizing lecture, Web, interactive CD, handouts, Power-point and other linked sites.

Objectives:       1) To acquire the ability to read, spell, pronounce, and interpret the language of the health care industry.

                          2) To recognize word parts, prefixes, suffixes, and word roots.

                          3) Ability to utilize accepted abbreviations when appropriate.

                          4) Ability to write and interpret medical notes or reports.

                          5) Understanding the legal ramifications of note keeping.

                          6) Understanding the use, interpretation, and navigation of the medical dictionary.

  Class Dates:      Since this is a web-enhanced program, lectures will only be held on the following weeks;   

                                                    Spring/ Fall    Week 1, Week 8

                                                    Summer        Week 1, Week 4

 

Classroom Procedure:  1) One 2-hour period as noted per schedule. Classes to include lecture, discussion, and interaction between students and teacher.

                                2) First class will be held in computer lab to introduce students to Web CT, e-mails, attachments, quiz samples, and Q&A about the class.

                                3) If you have any problems with class content or attendance, you must contact me immediately via phone or e-mail. (Falling behind in this class can be devastating)

                                4) Procrastination is the greatest enemy in this class; do not leave quizzes or the final till the end.

                                5) Even though this is only a two-credit class it requires a lot of study time.

                                6) Any cheating or plagiarism found or seen will result in an automatic “F” on that exam or paper.

Course Evaluation:          1) Attendance-consistent unexcused absence will result in a lowering of one letter grade level.

                                           2) Weekly quizzes either during lectures or on web. (Points may vary on topic matter).

                                            3) Bonus points will be available; ten percent of total will be added to your average.

                                            4) Midterm  (200 points). Overall points can change

                                            5) Final (200 points) Overall points can change

                                            6) Final written paper. This will utilize words from four different chapters based on final protocol available in class and on web. To be determined

Course Requirements:         

1)    Attendance is essential, to totally understand the work. You MUST call or e-mail me if you cannot make class.

2)    On-line exams are timed and are date sensitive. If you start a test you will have a fixed amount of time to complete it. Plan accordingly so you can be without interruption or disruption. If an emergency arises during your exam time preventing you from completing your exam; you must notify me immediately so that I can review the situation to determine if the exam can be reset or reopened for you.

3)    You can always work ahead.

4)    Class starts at 3:00 P.M. not 3:01 P.M. or 6:30 P.M. if evening class.

5)    Weekly exams will cover spelling, definition, word building, pronunciation, multiple choice, true/false, and fill in. Always based on the prior weeks learning.

6)    Mid semester, once you have had a significant exposure to the various words, you will write a story based on the words learned. Info will be given in class or on line.

7)    The instructor’s responsibility is to facilitate the learning process. Learning is; in the final analysis, the responsibility of the student. Make the most out of this opportunity. You will get out of it what you put into it. If you have questions ASK!!!! If you don’t understand ASK!!!! If you need extra help ASK!!!!! I won’t know there is a problem unless you talk to me.

8)    DON’T LEAVE CHAPTER QUIZZES TO THE LAST MINUTE. YOU CANNOT RUSH LEARNING THE USE AND DEFINITION OF THESE WORDS

9) FAILURE TO DO THE PAPER WILL LOWER YOUR FINAL GRADE ONE FULL LETTER GRADE

MIDTERM On-Line Chapters 1-8   Time specific). This test will time and    lock out after 135minutes (2 hours15 minutes) and is only available during the dates listed, no exceptions!
