    • Computer Basics: System Unit, Input, Output, Storage, Operating System
    • Communications and the Internet

  • Computer Software covered in the Office 2007 book:
    • Operating System: MS Windows XP
    • Word Processing Software: MS Word
    • Spreadsheet Software: MS Excel
    • Data Base Software: MS Access
    • Presentation Software: Power Point

Assignments: Discovering Computers 2009

For each chapter in this book, you will be given a quiz. The quiz contains 10 multiple questions based on the chapter, and 10 to 20 questions on Student Edition Labs. Each of these quizzes is timed at 20 to 30 minutes depending on the number of questions it contains. Each quiz can be taken only once.

The Student Edition Labs are provided by CoursePort. You will need to log in to CoursePort to work on these labs. Each lab contains sub-sections. You will need to work on all sections unless I direct you not to. Each sub-section contains four parts: introduction, observe, practice, and review. The review section contains several questions based on the section.

To prepare for a quiz before you take it at D2L, you should take the practice test for the chapter at CoursePort and answer the review questions for the assigned Student Edition Labs. CoursePort provides other resources helpful for your understanding of the course material. You should explore the the site to see which fit you the best. While you can do any activities as you like, the work you do at CoursePort will NOT be graded. The practice tests and Student Edition Labs can be repeated as many times as you like. However, each quiz at D2L can be taken only once (except the "Getting Ready" quiz).

At the end of the semester, there is a comprehensive exam covering all chapters in the book.

Office 2007

For each chapter in this book, you will be graded as the following:

  • For each chapter, you will follow the steps in the book. At the end of each chapter, you will have created a file (or files). You will submit these files using the drop boxes at D2L.

  • To reinforce what you have learned from the chapter, you will work on a SAM Project. For these projects, you will log in to SAM 2007 to download the instruction and a start file. You will follow the instructions to modify the start file. When you are done, you will submit the file via SAM2007. These files will be graded immediately by SAM (software) and you can see your score right away. You are allowed five attempts for each assignment at SAM2007. If you are not satisfied with the score after a submission, you should read the report for any marked errors. You can resubmit the assignment (up to five times) after you make corrections.

There is a unit exam after each software component.

Student Responsibility:
  • Know and adhere to the class policies, deadlines.
  • Spend 9-12 hours per week studying and working on assignments for the class.
  • Participate in class discussions and surveys.
  • Complete all assignments and tests.
  • Check email on a regular basis (at least once a week).
Class Policies:
Quizzes

No make-up quizzes will be given unless an arrangement is made PRIOR to the time of the quiz.

Software Projects

To allow unforeseeable circumstances, you can submit one assignment late provided that it is no more than one week late.

Incomplete:
To receive an "Incomplete", you must have completed at least 75% of the required work unless you have a "documented" medical condition. It is your responsibility to provide a written request for the "Incomplete".
Academic Dishonesty:
Each student must do all of their own work, including every single step of every single problem. Letting other people do your work and taking the credit as your own is a form of academic dishonesty.  An assignment, quiz, or exam will receive a score of zero if you cheat.  When I receive copied assignments submitted by different students, I will not distinguish the copied assignment from the original one.  All students involved will receive a score of zero.
Grade Book Keeping:
Your grades will be kept at D2L course site.  You can check your grades anytime during the semester. If you feel that your work is graded incorrectly, you must talk to the instructor within two weeks from the time the score becomes available at Desire2Learn.

Deadline for "W" grade:

If you have decided not to participate in this class during the semester, it is important that you officially withdraw from the class at the registration office.  Otherwise, your grade for this class will be F on your transcript. The last day to drop with a "W" is April, 27th. 2007.

Grading: Your final grade will be determined based on the total points you earn in quizzes, software projects,  lab tests, and the final exam.  The maximum number of points for the class is 920 and distributed as shown in the table below.

In general, 92-100% guarantees an A, 82-89.9% for B, 72-79.9% for C, 60-69.9% for D, and a percentage below 60% is an F.

Special Needs: Students with special needs should contact me or the Disability Services Office located at L-224 (phone, 651/450-8628; TTY, 651/450-8369).
