Course Topics: This class has two components: the concepts related to computers (using the Discovering Computers book) and application software (using the Office 2010 book).  The topics covered are:
  • Concepts covered in the Discovering Computers Fundamentals book
    • Computer Basics: System Unit, Input/Output, Storage, Operating System, Computer networks
    • Communications and the Internet
  • Computer Software covered in the Office 2010 book:
    • Operating System: MS Windows 7
    • Word Processing Software: MS Word
    • Presentation Software: Power Point
    • Spreadsheet Software: MS Excel
    • Data Base Software: MS Access

We will cover chapters 1 through 8 from the Discovering Computers book and all chapters on Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point from the Office 2010 book.

Student Responsibility:
  • Know and adhere to the class policies and deadlines.
  • Spend 9-12 hours per week studying and working on assignments for the class.
  • Complete all assignments and tests on time.
  • Check email on a regular basis (at least twice a week).
  • Ensure access to the Internet.  It is crucial to have a back up plan in case you run into problems with your regular work station (e.g., public library, open labs at Inver Hills Community College).
Assignments
Assignments in this class will cover both books. (You can see a table detailing all assignments for this class at here).

Assignments are given weekly. They are due at 11:55 pm on the Sunday in the same week. Each assignment may contain one chapter from the Discovering Computers book and/or the Office 2010 book. The assignment page (here) describes each weekly assignment and its due date.

Discovering Computers 2011

For each chapter in this book, you will be given a quiz. The quiz contains 20 multiple-choice questions based on the chapter. Each of these quizzes is timed at 20 minutes.

To help prepare for a quiz before you take it at D2L, you can take the practice test for the chapter at CoursePort. CoursePort provides other resources helpful for your understanding of the course material. You should explore the site to see which fit you the best. While you can do any activities as you like, the work you do at CoursePort will NOT be recorded or graded. The practice tests can be repeated as many times as you like. However, each quiz at D2L can be taken only once.

At the end of the semester, there is a comprehensive exam covering all chapters in the book.

Office 2010

For each chapter in this book, you will be graded as the following:

  • For the Office 2010 and Windows 7 chapter in this book, you will take the Windows 7 test at SAM.

For the remaining book, you will take a quiz after you study each chapter. As part of the quiz, you will need to submit a file or files for the chapter to D2L. You create the file by reading the text in the book and carry out the steps on your computer as you read. The file will be graded as part of the quiz. After you submit the file to D2L, you will then take the quiz based on the chapter. Each Office 2010 quiz contains 17 questions. Question 1 is worth 4 points and its score is based on the file you submit for the chapter. The remaining 16 questions are multiple-choice questions and is worth one point each.

  • To reinforce the skills you have learned from the chapter, you will work on a SAM Project. For these projects, you will log in to SAM 2010 to download the instruction and a start file. You will follow the instructions to modify the start file. When you are done, you will submit the file via SAM2010. These files will be graded immediately by SAM (software) and you can see your score right away. You are allowed five attempts for each assignment at SAM2010. If you are not satisfied with the score after a submission, you should read the report for any marked errors. You can resubmit the assignment (up to five times) after you make corrections.

There is a unit exam after each software component. This exam can be taken only once.

Class Policies:
Weekly Assignments

Assignment are given on every Monday and are due the following Sunday with the first quiz due on Jan. 22nd. Deadlines are set at 11:55 pm on the due date. To allow flexibilities for situations that are out of your control such as interrupted Internet connection, the actual cut off times at D2L and SAM are extended one week after the due date (No extension will be given pass the last day of the semester on May 9th.). No assignments will be accepted after the extended deadlines. The extended due dates cannot be extended further. If you work on an assignments after the due date and cannot submit assignments before the extended deadline due to difficulties you run into, you will receive a score of zero for that assignment even if it is not your fault. I need time to help resolve problems your run into and you need to start working on an assignment well before its due date.

Grade Book Keeping:
Your grades will be kept at D2L. You can check your grades anytime during the semester but your scores at SAM2010 will not be immediately reflected at D2L. I will upgrade the grades at D2L with your SAM2010 scores about once every two weeks. If you feel that your work is graded incorrectly, you must talk to me within two weeks from the time the score becomes available at D2L.

Incomplete:
To receive an "Incomplete", you must have completed at least 75% of the required work and is getting a grade of "C" or better unless you have a documented medical condition. It is your responsibility to provide a written request for the "Incomplete".

Academic Dishonesty:
Each student must do all of their own work, including every single step of every single problem.  Letting other people do your work and taking the credit as your own is a form of academic dishonesty.  An assignment, quiz, or exam will receive a score of zero if you cheat.  Cheating behavior may result in a grade of "F" for the class.  When I receive copied assignments submitted by different students, I will not distinguish the copied assignment from the original one.  All students involved will receive a score of zero.
  • Be Warned about SAM2010: When you download a start file from SAM 2010, the file is encrypted with your account information. SAM will flag a file as copied if you submit a file created by another account. In that case, the submission will receive a score of zero.

Deadline for "W" grade: If you have decided not to participate in this class during the semester, it is important that you officially withdraw from the class at the registration office.  Otherwise, your grade for this class will be F on your transcript. The last date to withdraw from this class and receive a grade of W is April 18, 2012.
