All computers on the IHCC campus are installed with Word 2010.  If working on campus is not an option for you, you must make sure you have access to a computer with Word 2010 off campus at the beginning of the class. An older version of the Word program will not work for this class.

Prerequisite:

Working knowledge of Windows operating system.

Course Description:

This course is designed for students wishing to acquire word processing knowledge for personal or professional use. Topics includes formatting, printing, tabs, tables, newsletters, mail merge, styles, desktop publishing, macros, web page creation, and online forms.

Student Responsibility:
  • Know and adhere to the class policies and deadlines.
  • Spend 9-12 hours per week studying and working on assignments for the class.
  • Complete all assignments and tests on time.
  • Check email on a regular basis (at least twice a week).
  • Ensure access to the Internet.  It is crucial to have a back up plan in case you run into problems with your regular work station (e.g., public library, open labs at Inver Hills Community College).
Assignments
This class will cover Tutorial 1 -- 9 in the book. For each tutorial in the book, you should do the following:
  • Read the text in its entirety. The texts with background in tan color are the actual steps you need to carry out on your computer. You may be given data files for the tasks. When you reach the end of the Tutorial, you will have created or modified a file or files. These files need to be uploaded to D2L and will be graded.

    Important notes:

    1. To receive credits for your assignments, you must use the data files I placed at D2L for this class instead of those from the publisher directly. This is to avoid copied digital files of completed assignments from previous semesters being submitted for this semester.

    2. You can follow the instruction in the book to practice on your own when asked to print or email a file, but you do not need to do that for this class. Only digital files are required.

    3. All files must be submitted to the drop box at D2L. I do not accept assignments via email.

  • After you finish reading the tutorial and upload the files from the tutorial to D2L, you will take a quiz based on the tutorial.

  • To reinforce the skills you have learnt from the tutorial, you will work on the "Review Assignments" after the tutorial. The files created or modified for this assignment will need to be uploaded to D2L as part of your grade.

At the end of the semester, there is a final competency exam that need to be taken in person on campus. This exam is scheduled on Tuesday May 8th. from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Grading: Your final grade will be determined based on the total points you earn on the quizzes, tutorial assignments, and the final exams.

In general, 91-100% guarantees an A, 81-90.9% for B, 71-80.9% for C, 61-70.9% for D, and a percentage below 61% is an F.

Category Percentage (approximate)
Quizzes 30%
Tutorial Assignments 40%
Final Competency Exam 30%
Total  100%
Class Policies:
Weekly Assignments

Assignment are given on every Monday and are due the following Sunday with the first due date on Jan. 22 nd. Deadlines are set at 11:55 p.m. on the due date. To allow flexibilities for situations that are out of your control such as interrupted Internet connection, the actual cut off times at D2L are extended one week after the due date. No assignments will be accepted after the extended deadlines (No extension will be given pass the last day of the semester on May 9th.). The extended due dates cannot be extended further. If you work on an assignments after the due date and cannot submit assignments before the extended deadline due to difficulties you run into, you will receive a score of zero for that assignment even if it is not your fault. I need time to help resolve problems your run into and you need to start working on an assignment well before its due date.

Grade Book Keeping:
Your grades will be kept at D2L. You can check your grades anytime during the semester. If you feel that your work is graded incorrectly, you must talk to me within two weeks from the time the score becomes available at D2L.

Incomplete:
To receive an "Incomplete", you must have completed at least 75% of the required work and is getting a grade of "C" or better unless you have a documented medical condition. It is your responsibility to provide a written request for the "Incomplete".
Academic Dishonesty:
Each student must do all of their own work, including every single step of every single problem.  Letting other people do your work and taking the credit as your own is a form of academic dishonesty.  An assignment, quiz, or exam will receive a score of zero if you cheat.  Cheating behavior may result in a grade of "F" for the class.  When I receive copied assignments submitted by different students, I will not distinguish the copied assignment from the original one.  All students involved will receive a score of zero.

Deadline for "W" grade: If you have decided not to participate in this class during the semester, it is important that you officially withdraw from the class at the registration office.  Otherwise, your grade for this class will be F on your transcript. The last date to withdraw from this class and receive a grade of W is April 18th 2012.

Special Needs: Students with special needs should contact me or the Disability Services Office located at L-224 (phone, 651/450-8628; TTY, 651/450-8369).
Early Alert Program:

The Early Alert program is designed to promote student success through communication between students, instructors, and advisors. If I see that you are experiencing difficulties in the course (in terms of assignments, test scores, participation, or attendance) an email message will be sent to your Inver Hills email account through the Early Alert program.

The message will include a list of college resources available to you and steps you can take to improve your progress. These Early Alert emails will be sent only to your Inver Hills email account, which is the college’s official means of communication with students. Kate Southwick is the advisor assigned to work with you while you are enrolled in this course. You can reach her at 651-450-3422 or ksouthw@inverhills.edu.
